ANIMATED INSTALLATIONS IN THE PEARL
In 2007 we were proud to present the first ever show of animated installations – 18 in all (see below for a complete list) including both indoor and outdoor work. The installations were as richly creative and inventive as they were varied, hard to categorize in a single definition.
They ranged from Brooklyn-based artist Greg Barsamian's self-contained strobing sculpture, No Never Alone, awarded the Grand Prix, to the Argentinian collective Doma's witty, site specific, Conveyor Belt, projected outdoors on two intersecting walls of a car park. Some installations, like Eric Dyer's Copenhagen Cycles with its multiple spinning zoetropes, recalled animation's origins in optical devices. Others used the latest computer technology to allow interactive spectator participation, in Karolina Sobiecka's Stability; or to synchronise multiple layers of animation and live performance, in Miwa Matreyek's Dreaming of Lucid Living (awarded a Student Grand Prix).
This section of the Festival was concentrated in the reclaimed industrial neighborhood of the Pearl. The Installations were displayed in both indoor and outdoor sites centered in and around the gallery spaces of the Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA).
